Julia Bornefeld born in 1963 in Kiel, Germany, lives and works in Bruneck and Peschiera, Italy. She studied at the Fachhochschule für Gestaltung Kiel, as well as the Università delle Belle Arti di Venezia with Emilio Vedova and the Akademija Likovna Umjetnost in Ljubljana. Bornefeld has received numerous national and international awards and is represented in prestigious private and public collections. As a multidisciplinary artist, Bornefeld works with light, sound, sculpture, and painting across various surfaces. Her artistic practice explores diverse media and themes, showcasing her innovative and experimental approach. The exhibition title FUNDUS for the 12th Carte Blanche stems from the Latin word meaning “ground” or “foundation.” In art, it refers to a pool of ideas, themes, or motifs that serve as the basis for creative work. This conceptual reservoir is invaluable for artists, allowing them to draw from existing inspirations and reinterpret them dynamically. In FUNDUS, Bornefeld presents a selection of works spanning her career, from early pieces created at age 24 to new works specially conceived for the Hotel Aurora in 2024. The exhibition features life-sized sculptures, drawings, and objects that engage with her continuous artistic evolution. FUNDUS is not only a reservoir of ideas but also a metaphor for collective memory, representing the cultural, historical, and social experiences that shape both individual and societal consciousness. This dynamic space enables creativity and innovation to thrive.
